100 rides of at least 100 miles

A few years ago, I learned of an obscure cycling stat called "Eddington Cycling Number".
I'll leave the internet search to you to learn the background.
[I will note that it is my opinion that the Wiki-web def'n is so poorly worded
That it is essentially wrong.
I certainly think the author of that def'n (or at least the wording last time I checked)
Deserved a failing grade in a mathematics class somewhere along the way.
But that is just my opinion.]
Essentially, it is a measure of the number of long rides one has completed.

My definition?

One's Eddington Cycling Number is the largest integer, N, for which the following statement is true:
I have completed N rides that were at least N miles long.

Last Saturday, five of us joined my friend Ricochet Robert

As he snagged his 10K-Hound status on a local permanent.
Our friend, BikerBob snagged his R-36.
[In NC, we don't restart the count after getting to R-12, we just keep adding-on.]
I snagged my 100th ride that was at least 100-miles long.
I.e., ECN = 100.

I wouldn't be me, this blog wouldn't accurately represent me, if I failed to have an occasional "stats" post.

So ... three charts, and maybe some comments.
[I don't really plan these posts completely, ya-know, I just type what comes to mind.]

My ECN history by year (my adult cycling career began in 2002 or 2003, but I lost those stats in a computer malfunction -- all those rides were on the green-ways, and nothing was longer than 29-miles, and I doubt there were as many as 20 rides in either year -- but, boy, that seemed like a LOT of bicycle riding -- I ventured onto the road in 2004 -- my first ride on the road was 17+ miles -- I thought I was going to die -- there are no hills on greenways, and there certainly are on just about every road in north Raleigh and further north, too):

Career statistics through:

year rides miles mi. / r long  E
2004 38 1,176.2 31.0 53.4        26
2005 75 2,441.7 32.6 75.6        33
2006 133 4,926.6 37.0 75.6        42
2007 212 8,457.1 39.9 109.0        49
2008 294 12,222.4 41.6 109.0        54
2009 420 18,439.1 43.9 126.3        63
2010 532 25,998.6 48.9 300.3        71
2011 645 35,203.4 54.6 377.2        81
2012 746 44,138.8 59.2 377.4      100

[It is always an adventure trying to copy an Excel spreadsheet chart into Blogger.
I am NOT going to try and line up the headings with the columns.
Unless the published result looks quite bad.
Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer all hand differently.
Interestingly, IE seems to handle the best whereas Firefox is a disaster at that.]

Another way to summarize my long ride history:

Rides by year currently contributing to E
year  # rides  miles mi. / r
2004 0 0.0 0.0
2005 0 0.0 0.0
2006 0 0.0 0.0
2007 1 109.0 109.0
2008 1 108.2 108.2
2009 5 544.9 109.0
2010 25 3,430.9 137.2
2011 36 5,069.1 140.8
2012 32 4,784.4 149.5
total 100 14,046.5 140.5

You may have noticed the 109-miler from 2007.
That was my first EVER 100-mile ride.
A solo effort on a version of my Virginia Border Raid route.
My previous long was 78+ miles -- the week before -- on my Shoofly route.

I've written and mapped those before.
If you want to read about those efforts, follow the above links.
There are likely Trimble-maps embedded in those previous posts,
If not, you can find them on the IR-route-maps-page.

I took up randonneuring in 2010.
You might have guessed that from the chart above, or
From my occasional posts and references to the NC-2010-rando-rookie class.

A third (and last) presentation of stats for / from my long rides:

[Amazing, the last chart lines-up almost perfectly (in IE compose mode).
I wonder what the difference is.
Edit Oct-05-2013:  I've now learned how to manipulate Excel charts copied into blogger:
use Firefox!]

You'll notice the ECN has been ratcheting up approximately once a month for the last year-plus.  That is EXTREMELY unlikely to continue in the future.
For example, the next "ratchet up" will be to ECN = 101, and that will require 5 rides.
Only someone attempting to 10K-Hound next year is likely to do that in a month.

Ricochet Tells a Story

Last Saturday, about 50-miles en route to:

And as we approached and passed the "Rock of Ages Winery",
Robert started to tell a story.

Hear me when I tell you this:  Robert can tell a story!
I've heard every one of those vignettes in that PBP write-up,
I've also heard the ones he never got around to writing-up.
The write-up is excellent (okay, I may be biased).
When he is in the mode to properly tell the stories ... excellent is an inadequate adjective.

Robert includes animations and sound-effects, and his timing is superb.

So ... we are about 50-miles into the ride,
Approaching and passing the winery,
And Robert says he has a story about the last time he had ridden L-L-L.
Within 5 seconds, sound-effects.
"Fantastic!", I thought, "Robert is in good story mode.  This should fill 20-minutes or more."
I'm smiling inside.

Robert restarts the story so Bob can hear the entire presentation.
He repeats the same sound-effect.
I know this is going to be an enjoyable 15 or 20 minutes.

Instead, 20 seconds later, the story was done.
Complete story in 25 or 30 seconds.

Gee, a 20-minute story would have been great.
It is not like we are short on time.
We have another 13-miles to the control.
And another 102-kms after that.

Oh, well.
A story that only takes 30-seconds to tell is better than no story at all.

Dec-01: Shiftless, 10K-Hound, R-36, ECN-100

Low temp shortly after the 0700 start -- 32 F.
High temp -- 66 F.
Temp at the finish -- 50 F.

The 66 didn't feel much like 66,
Except on a climb or two.

Leesville-Leasburg-Leesville (L-L-L) 204-km Permanent

Shiftless:
A bit of an exaggeration.
Ian always had at least 2 gears to choose from after his rear derailleur cable broke.
He managed to get the chain into a middling cog before the homestretch of Kemp + Boxelder roads.
Was semi-amusing to notice Ian going backward whenever the road tilted up.
Ricochet, BikerBob and I certainly learned how to keep Ian at our climbing pace.

10K-Hound:
Ricochet Robert reached and passed 10K RUSA kms on this ride.
He thought it appropriate for him to mark the occasion on L-L-L.
He did the route 7 times last year, and 14 times this year.
Only.  14.  Times.

His exact 10K-moment was pretty close to the free-range chicken ranch.
Diane happened to be outside doing some chores.
We got her to take a couple photos.
L to R:  Bob, Ian, Robert, me.  (The fast contingent from Wilmington (R^2 + Rex) had gone on ahead -- their loss.)
Can't decide which photo I prefer.  Maybe the first one.

R-36:
Bob became the first of the 2010-NC-rando rookies to get R-36.
_ _ (He'll be the only one of us to get R-36 this calendar year.
 _ _ Bryan + Tim + Ian are a couple months behind.)

He's only had to "rescue" his series four times:
  1. Feb-2011 after hernia surgery in January,
  2. June-2011 after crashing into a dog at night on a 600k (broke a rib or two),
  3. July-2012 after laying off in order to avoid serious Achilles tendinitis.
  4. Sep-2012 after getting the worst end of the deal with a pot-hole on the ToC-1200.
At the end of this ride, Bob noted agreement with something MariaF once said:
Triple-L is harder than the "Sauartown 200" permanent.

ECN-100:
Eddington Cycling Number:
After this ride:  100
Meaning that I have completed at least 100 different rides that were at least 100 miles long.

The fast contingent from Wilmington (R^2 + Rex):
After we turned off Old-75 onto the Stagville Rd climb about 24-miles into the ride,
We only saw them when we repeatedly woke them from their naps
As they diligently waited for us at each control, and at the finish.

The Dark Monster:
Ian, Bob, Robert and I did NOT beat the Dark Monster on this ride.
With the struggles of several + the derailleur cable break and "fix",
We were happy with the resulting tie.

Ian + MaryR had a thoughtful surprise for Robert at the finish:
Very nice touch from Mary + Ian.

BikerBob took several photos before, during and after the ride.

"rexycarp" also took a number of photos before, during and after.

A great day to have been alive.
A great day to have done a bike ride on a great course with some great companions.
Oh, and the fast contingent from Wilmington was also okay.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Nov-24: NC-Rando-Year-End-Pop + Party

Two rides were on offer this day:
  1. a 200k RUSAB, starting at 0700, based on the OakElmOak Permanent, and
  2. a 100 / 111 / 106 km RUSAP, starting at 1000, based on the Bunn Warmer Perm-Pop

Four people did the Brevet (two likely for R-series purposes, two doing their first brevet).
All four finished, with times of around 9h00.
Too fast!  (For me, anyway.)
[As TimL and I "discussed" at the party:  luckily for us they didn't officially do the OakElmOak Perm -- our joint record time with Ian remains intact.  We each got a chuckle from that.]

Several cancelled out of the Populaire, so we had only 17 starters.
We lost one along the way -- Tom (?) doing his first RUSA ride gave in to cramps.
It is my impression that everyone pretty much enjoyed the cool temps and bright, warming sunshine.

However, none of us enjoyed the headwind on the false-flat incline on Fowler Rd on the return.
I had never noticed that Fowler has that long incline on the return, and
I've done that stretch of road quite a few times (including pre/non-rando).

Of the 16 finishers, I assert that the most notable finish was by Ricochet Robert.
Upon completion of the ride AND, hem-hem, signing his card (and Alan submitting the results),
Robert became the 4th North Carolinian to qualify and apply for his RUSA Cup.
Not bad given that Robert's first bike ride as an adult, coming at age 61, was exactly 31-months prior.

[I just re-read the key section in the above link. Here is a phrase that caught my attention:
"... asked Robert how he was feeling and he stated he was not sure if the legs were going make it."
Why did that catch my attention?  Because that is what Robert says most every ride.
Including the Party-Populaire being described (sorta') here! ]

Here is a link to few photos pre-ride and during the party by BobB.
Bob's captions tell the story better than I would.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Several hours after completion of our appointed cycling rounds,
We all met again, with some additional friends that couldn't make it to the rides,
For some rounds of another sort.

There was also a presentation of some information about randonneurs / randonneuring in North Carolina.

Special mention of the three current or retired RBA's at the party (Richard, Alan, Tony).
2nd or 3rd oldest and consecutive SR series in the U.S. -- thanks, Alan!
[I forget which, 2nd or 3rd -- but the Raleigh series is about twice as old as RUSA.]
2nd oldest (?) and consecutive Fleche in the U.S.-- thanks Richard + Tony!

[Perhaps we need an historian to dig-out, write-up, and publish NC's pre-RUSA history.]

It is my opinion that the website of record for NC-rando is, or ought to be, "Branson's site".
(Branson hates it when someone refers to it as "his" -- so, of course, ... .)
[Hmmn -- domain name expired,]
It is my opinion that the blog of record for NC rando is Research Trailer Park.

However, at the party, after the food:

One international award was announced:
2012-Adrian-Hands-Society-Spirit-AwardMark Thomas.
(I'll make an exception to my guideline regarding last names in this case; otherwise, who could possibly figure out who "MarkT of Seattle" was -- LOL.)

North Carolina Awards:
  • 2012-NC-Rookie-of-the-Year:  LukeH of Asheville
  • 2012-NC-Volunteer-of-the-Year:  Raleigh RBA Fearless Leaduh' "Uncle" Alan
  • 2012-NC-Comeback-Rando-of-the-Year:  Al P of Wendell, Zebulon, (?- one of those).
  • 2012-NC-Randonneur-of-the-Year:  Dean, aka, "Deaner", aka, the "Phun Physiologist".
Congratulations to each!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to the organizing committee for this year's rides and the party.  I know I had a good time.  I suspect everyone did.

According to the announcement e-mail, the committee was:
  • Jerry
  • MikeD
  • Cap'n
  • Branson
  • Alan

Nov-23: Quick Ride on Bahama Beach (103k Perm-Pop)

In the doldrums?
Go do a fast ride.
Sometimes it helps.

Didn't ride Wed. with Ricochet.
He wanted to start when it would still be cold, and
It turned out I just didn't care to get on the bike.

Could have ridden yesterday (Thanksgiving), but
I just didn't care to get on the the bike.

Today -- nearly "back against the wall".
But only because I have a distance goal for the year.
Still, I was having trouble getting interested in throwing a leg-over this morning.

Finally got around to do a Noon start.
The stop-light at the corner of Creedmoor + Norwood (the start / finish of the ride)
Was NOT cooperative at the start!
Two minutes waiting for the light to change.

Then ... ... ... I had cadence into the wind on Norwood.
And I had cadence for the 5 creek valley climbs on Victory Ch / Kemp Rd.
And ... ... I kept the cadence almost every pedal-stroke of the ride.

  • At approx. 14.9-miles, passing the Exxon on Red Mill Rd at I-85, official elapsed time  0h57 ( and the in-motion less than that).
  • At the Bahama Info Control, 24.7-miles (39.7-kms), elapsed time  1h32.
  • At the Stem Open Control, 37.3-miles (60.0-kms), elapsed time  2h17.
  • At the Grissom Info Control, 51.9-miles (83.5-kms), elapsed time  3h12.
  • At the finish, 64.5 miles (103.8-kms), elapsed time  4h00.

Interestingly, by the time I got to Bahama, I knew that, if I could keep up the cadence, etc., I would be challenging a sub-4-hour time.  So, virtually the entire ride was an effort to keep the cadence up, stay in the right gear, stand-up just the right amount, trying to get some time-in-the-bank because I knew that from 12.6 miles to go (i.e., the Grissom Info Control) until 5.9-miles to go (i.e., the turn onto Ghoston), I would be bang-on into the wind.

Obviously, I did not get sub-4-hours, but I sure "gave it a scare", and I am stoked !!

Hope I have some legs for tomorrow's NC-rando-year-end-party-Populaire.

NC Rando Math -- Part 4

414  =  Sauartown-200k  +  Carolina-Crossroads

414  =  Egypt-Mtn  +  Triple-L

------------------------------------------------------------

Q,:  What's the point of all the "math lessons"?

A.:  Since mid-August, I've been targeting a specific RUSA km total.  Everything was planned down to the last kilometer.  Then, a few things happened:

Then, everything settled down for the November and December plan.  Until:
  • the NC-rando-year-end-party-pop got listed / credited for 111-kms,
  • even though the Black-Knight-of-County-and-State-Line-Dashes had assured me the credit would be 100-kms.
  • To see what that has done to my plan, click here

Lessons learned?
  • My plans never work out.
  • Previous plans never seemed to work out; why should this one have worked out?
  • It is good to have a multiple permanents, with similar, yet slightly different official distances.
  • Friends are great, but they can mess you up -- don't tell them your plans.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I WILL get to my goal for the year.
I just wish I knew for-absolutely-sure what the credit for the party-pop will be.

Sigh .....................................

NC Rando Math -- Part 3

208  =  Kerr-Lake-Loop

208  =  Yanceyville-Ramble

208  =  Bahama-Beach  +  Benson-Mule-Pull

-----------------------------------------------------------------

210  =  Egypt-Mtn  (for much of the year, Egypt-Mtn was worth 221-kms credit)

210  =  Lake-Gaston-210

210  =  2  x  Benson-Mule-Pull

-----------------------------------------------------------------

420  =  2  x  Egypt-Mtn

420  =  3  x  Hope-Springs-Eternal

More later?
